While Oracle OpenWorld is still hot in our memories, I’m going to be presenting two of my OOW11 sessions at the Toronto Oracle User Group’s DD Day 2011 on 28-Oct-2011 — in just a bit over 2 weeks. Last time I presented for TOUG at their summer meeting in 2008 which makes it a tad over 3 years ago. It was a good fun and I’m looking forward to see many of you there again.

By the way, I think it’s quite a deal at $140 for non-members and $90 for TOUG members for a one day conference like that, especially if you are interested in the topics presented.

I have two sessions to present:

Is Oracle Exadata for You? Starring Roles for the Best Technology
Oracle Exadata has become the fastest growing Oracle product in history and every IT manager is curious how it can help their business. This session will explore Oracle Exadata suitability for various environments and what problems it solves for IT and business. Based on Pythian’s Oracle Exadata experience, this session will examine the benefits of Exadata in different deployment scenarios to help IT managers justify the technology for the right projects – data warehousing, OLTP, database consolidation as well as hybrid environments.

Under the Hood of Oracle ASM: Failability Analysis
Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) has introduced a new concept of mirroring that is implemented differently than in any known RAID levels. So what happens when not one but two or more disks fail? Is such situation a hypothetical and highly unlikely? This session will help attendees to evaluate the data loss risks and adopt the best ASM configuration according to their risk profile. For a better understanding of ASM reliability features, Alex will peek under the hood of ASM and provide live demos simulating ASM disk failures and ASM handling of such failures.

Both of the sessions went very well last week at the Oracle OpenWorld. The demo during my last session was really fun and we had some real BOOM as confirmed by that tweet. The first session was co-presented by myself and Marc Fielding, but I think I should manage it OK alone. I’ve come up with initial slide-deck and presented it but asked Marc to take over the session at Collaborate 11 as well as join me at the OOW11 — he has made awesome contributions there.

Besides myself, there are couple fellow members of OakTable Network presenting and my friends — Wolfgang Breitling and Gaja Krishna Vaidyanatha. Both are some of my most favorite speakers on Oracle database performance topics.

Longstory short — see you in Toronto on 28th of October! If you read my blog, please do come by and say hello. If you want to learn more about Pythian or discuss some specific details of your current projects and ask specific questions, please email me to at pythian.com and I ensure we meet and chat.
