My First Experience Running SLOB – Status Update 1

I am going to continue writing about our ongoing IO testing efforts under this blog I decided to provide the first post here to give readers a bit more context. SLOB is nothing but a ~84MB schema with a table and index created in Oracle database to test LIO (if you set a big db_cache_size) or PIO (if you sent a small db_cache). Well by default there are 128 schemas created with the same data structures.IMHO: This is a very good idea to test the performance by executing the same actions that most of Applications do in a real live, but make it so simple that it is application agnostic.

Oracle VM: What if you have just 1 HDD system

In my previous post I described how to install Oracle VM and Oracle VM Manager on the same sandbox. However, to start playing with Oracle VM v3 you need to configure some storage to be used for new VM hosts. The problem is that Oracle states that you should allocate a full HDD for VM host storage. If you have just one HDD in your system then you are in trouble, as part of it is already occupied by the Dom0 host.

I Have Never Seen Such an Impressive Line-up for the AUSOUG Conference

If you haven’t considered attending the AUSOUG conference in Perth yet, you definitely should! Out of 50 sessions I counted 21 to be presented by Oracle ACEs and Oracle ACE Directors; 8 by Oracle employees and at least 2 by Oracle Certified Masters! Briefly looking though the conference program I would like to suggest that you consider sessions from the following speakers.

My Failure, Success and Great Experience at Oracle OpenWorld 2011

A bit more than a week passed since most of us who been part of the OpenWorld are back from San Francisco. It is about time to start sharing stories on how it went for each of us. I must admit that it happened to be a very stressful OpenWorld for me personally. I am recovering from it slowly. On the positive side I met so many great people, discovered how supportive people are and how great is to be a part of the Pythian Team! Let’s talk about how my 2 presentations went at Oracle OpenWorld 2011.

How to know if Automatic Memory Management is your Friend?

Common Cause for ORA-4031 in 10gR2, Excess “KGH: NO ACCESS” Memory Allocation [Video] [ID 801787.1] Don’t be misled by the title of the note. I think any Oracle DBA who switch on ASMM should read though this carefully. The note is full of significant technical details. I will leave it to you to read it carefully. In this blog post I would like to share with you the most important takeaway, from my point of view.
