anticipate seeing people from all over the continent at UKOUG. The attendance over the past few years has been growing and nothing short of astounding. I am giving two papers at the show … one on a dear friend of us all called rman and the other on a close second … the physical standby. For me, even in the midst of emerging technology solutions, there’s still nothing like the old-fashioned Oracle CORE database arena.
With every conversation geared towards SSD, the confusion grew. Until I finally had enough, and also had some spare time, and could sit down and untangle the web. Here’s what I found out…
I returned from AUSOUG conference in Perth (Australia) just last week. This blog is my report from the conference for the days 0 and 1.
Since I was using a version of 11 already, an experimental upgrade was not a problem. With the BE (boot environments) feature, one could boot into any version safely. BE is an awesome feature. Need to install a patch? Install into a boot environment – any problems reboot into the old environment. BEs leverage ZFS snapshots to create a clone of your boot disk, install any patches onto it and allow you to switch flawlessly between the two.

While Oracle does supply a list of RPMs that must be installed on a Linux system, that information does not help you in determining which Oracle files are dependent on the RPMs in question. The presentation deadline for UKOUG is 8 days away. I have been madly preparing for 2 presentations, one on my best friend (rman) and the other on my co-best friend (the physical standby). Both of these topics have been perennial favourites for me and many of my attendees. I find with both of these items, there is always something more to learn.
I took debug of duplication and figured out that RMAN internally executes procedure dbms_tts.transport_set_check preventing any further copy operations if tablespaces do not satisfy TTS requirements. Now the plot thickens and considering RMAN shows everything that it does in log file I decided to repeat the same steps but one by one and manually. Let’s get into it.
