It seems to be assumed that fixed-point values, DECIMAL and NUMERIC, in MySQL are not susceptible to rounding errors because they are exact numeric data types. It must be kept it mind, that there are limits in precision, and the maximum number of digits for DECIMAL is 65. What I am discussing here is rounding error.
This is my first Oracle OpenWorld in a few years. I have not changed (I don’t think), but the show must have grown significantly. With the huge number of acquisitions over the past few years, I am sure I will not recognize some of the solutions mentioned in many presentation billboards as I pass through all the conference venues. For any first time attendees who stumble into this post, my advice as an OOW veteran:
Sometimes clients ask us to implement scripts that change objects in their schemes. In order to prevent the situation when these scripts hung just because some, or several, objects are pinned. Here are two simple procedures that can help to check what we will get during our maintenance.
Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) is in many ways similar to an Exadata quarter rack: they both use two similar compute servers in an engineered system configuration, with shared storage and flash storage. But in other ways, especially networking and storage, they differ significantly.
I’ve started putting together some information about the Oracle Database Appliance in question-and-answer form. If you have an unanswered question, ask away in the comment section in this post.

I was in Melbourne presenting two of my papers for Australian Oracle User Group Victorian members. I received a very warm welcome in that beautiful city. it was my pleasure to meet several Oracle DBAs and present for AUSOUG members. 25 people took part in the meeting! I should say that it was one of the best audiences I have presented for over the last few months! I received several good questions and we have a very good follow up discussion.
In this post I explain how you can install both Oracle VM Server 3 and Oracle VM Manager 3 allocating to both components just 1GB of RAM on the same logical server (Dom0).
Having recently joined Pythian’s MySQL team, in anticipation of my first blog post, I was eager to add my blog feed to Planet MySQL for aggregation. Unfortunately in my haste I pasted the link to my blog as opposed to the blog feed and as the link was erroneous, Planet MySQL recursed back up the url until it reached a valid feed. Unfortunately for me, that was the main Pythian Blog feed and as a result all Pythian blog content is now getting aggregated under my name.
I’ve been following the development of Tungsten Replicator for quiet some time now, and recently was fortunate enough to find the time to take a look at the product in more detail. Here’s my review, enjoy.
