A client of ours is just getting started with Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) and I wonder as time marches on how popular this cloud solution is going to play out for them and Amazon as a valid/useable service offering.
I’ll be blogging about reliability more in the coming days and weeks, but I’m going to quickly get warmed up with this post, pointing out two worthy reads in the domain of reliability.
Some people call it day 1 but the user group forum on Sunday is so packed with information it is really day 1. The exhibit hall opened naturally on Monday and the chachka-hunters were out in force. I did my customary vendor hall walkabout with Greg for a bit and it was pretty much same-old same-old. I did not recognize all the booths but the ever-popular perennial vendors were everywhere to be seen. The evening was occupied by the Friends of Pythian event and it was well attended by colleagues, partners, and client representative.
The day was action packed with sessions and I presented my Oracle rman:Don’t Forget the Basics to an enthusiastic crowd in Moscone west. The room was close to full with some hanging out at the back. It has been a while since I have presented in a room so close to being full. There was a handful of questions and comments during the session and a group of attendees approached me to follow-up afterwards.
One of Pythian’s clients in attendance was curious what Sunday at OOW is all about and I let the others in the lounge respond first then offered my 2 cents. There are actually two different perspectives from the presentations at OOW:

Many database administrators who are hungry for CORE database sessions at Oracle Open World need to look far and go out of their way to resister early for presentations in this discipline. Database administration, in some circles, is looked upon as a “dying” role as vendors automate and encapsulate CORE support activities into the likes of ASH, Cloud Control and some other high-end management assistants. The fact remains … regardless of what we are told, the strong CORE database skills are here to stay and a demand for education on this topic is not going anywhere quickly.
Here are a few suggestions to maximize your time at OOW and allow you to get as much bang for your education (and entertainment) dollar as possible:
I was thumbing through the photos in my iPhone from my Melbourne trip of August, where I went to present two sessions on Exadata in Insync12 from Pythian. I spent couple of hours on first and last day in sight-seeing or should I say my iPhone did the sight-seeing, and I nursed him. As I was going through the photos, I realized I was kind of watching those places first time. There were many things which were present in the photos, but I never saw them with my own eyes while walking or traveling in the trams or cabs.
