So there I am, on my morning bus ride, reading my copy of ‘The Definitive Guide to Catalyst’, unaware of the surprise that is about to fall on me like a rabid koala bear…The script in the book is a wee bit different and has been improved upon, but its origin is unmistakable. Somehow, unexpectedly, a hack of mine found its way into publication. Fame, glory, and page 293 of the Catalyst book, I can finally claim ‘em all as rightfully mine! But, serendipitous glee aside, three important lessons lie in this little story.
Gowlings hosted a debate on open source licenses organized by the Free and Open Source Software Learning Centre (FOSSLC). The debate was conducted between the proponents of three major Open Source licenses: Mike Milinkovich for the EPL, Matt Asay for the GPL, and David Maxwell for the BSD license. While it is slightly more stable, within minutes I had had my first crash on the panel. I had several more, not hardware-related. Now these could be the fault of the applet developers and not KDE itself, but it certainly soured my first look. I will probably nuke this install and reinstall with the KDE3 remix over the weekend.
OCLUG (The Ottawa Canada Linux Users Group) is putting on an event called—you guessed it—End of School with Linux. This is happening on April 28, 2009 starting at 11am at the University of Ottawa in the SITE building, room C0136. The purpose of the event is to help people with their Linux systems, install Linux, fix issues, and just generally help out in the community. Your humble blogger will be there, manning the booth from 1200-1600, so come on down. And tell a friend, too.
I’m sorry to have to tell you, dear Log Buffer readers, but you’ll have to go without your fix of database blogs today. Your humble Log Buffer coordinator was too busy to take it all in this week (and “all” is an awful lot these days, have you noticed?).
I have been talking more and more with colleagues about the Open Source community and licenses. Zak Greant recently wrote in Free Culture vs. Fear Culture vs. Fee Culture that, “People with bad intentions will do bad things . . . often regardless of the license on the work.” And, unfortunately, he is right. If I release an article or presentation video with a Creative Commons license, it is still possible for my work to be plagiarized, and if it is, I will still feel violated. Many of us who use Creative Commons or MySQL have an Open Source mentality. We often do not see value in pirating software—why would we use Microsoft Word (a legally licensed copy, or pirated) if we can use OpenOffice or NeoOffice?
I apologize for off-topic on this blog but I think it’s important…Victoria experienced unprecedented bushfire this month taking lives of almost 180 (the list is growing) people and leaving thousands without homes. This disaster left tears on everyone’s faces even outside of Australia. If you would like to show the compassion and provide some help there are few ways. One of them is to contribute to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal 2009. You don’t have to be in Australia to do that — you just need to have a big heart and few bucks to share.
So, a colleague ran into issues booking the Santa Clara Hyatt Regency Hotel—apparently there were no rooms with 2 double beds left for the MySQL 2009 Conference and Expo.
