COLLABORATE 13 à la Pythian …

As per many previous IOUG/OAUG/Quest shows, Pythian is will be in Denver next week! It was a sunny day in the fall of 1991 when I gave my first paper at International Oracle User Week (IOUW), a pre-cursor to COLLABORATE and a few earlier incarnations called IOUG-Live and IOUG-Alive! It has been a whirlwind of…

Performance Settings of Concurrent Managers

This is the second article in a series about internals and performance of concurrent managers. In this post, we’ll take a look at three important settings that affect the performance of the concurrent managers: number of processes, “sleep seconds”, and “cache size”. This article might be a bit on the theoretical side, but it should provide a good understanding of how these settings actually affect the behavior and performance of concurrent managers.

A (Oracle) Pirate Looks At: Extending OEM 12c with Oracle Application Management Pack for E-Business Suite

Mother, mother Oracle. I have heard you call… Wanted to sail upon your cloud (control) since 7.3.4… You’ve seen it all, you’ve seen it all… (Paraphrased from Jimmy Buffett’s, “A Pirate Looks at 40”) For a while now, Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) has had an application management component for E-Business Suite (EBS), but it wasn’t…

How to Fix the Oracle EBS 12.1.3 JDBC Connection Lock Issue

As with any product, when a new feature is introduced, there is always increased chance of bugs. Oracle E-Business Suite is no different. In release Release 12, Oracle introduced a usability feature called Configurable Homepage. This is a new homepage layout which is drastically different from 11i. This feature brings in a new gamut of…

Oracle E-Business Suite News from OpenWorld 2012

I always followed all Oracle OpenWorld happenings through blogs, but this is the first OpenWorld that I physically attended. The blog post from Michael Abbey on tips for OOW first timers was a godsend for me. This helped me to navigate OOW like a pro. This is what I checked out..

Day 1 at Oracle Open World: Did not disappoint

The day was action packed with sessions and I presented my Oracle rman:Don’t Forget the Basics to an enthusiastic crowd in Moscone west. The room was close to full with some hanging out at the back. It has been a while since I have presented in a room so close to being full. There was a handful of questions and comments during the session and a group of attendees approached me to follow-up afterwards.

Around the World in a Day: Oracle Apps upgrades the Pythian way

Pythian’s Oracle Apps DBA team recently upgraded a client’s E-Business Suite system to version 12.1.3, bringing them into compliance with Oracle’s baseline support requirements for Release 12.1 nearly one year ahead of deadline. We’d like to tell you a bit about this project — not to toot our own horn (though that’s nice too, we are kinda proud), but because it provides an ideal illustration of the power of the Pythian service delivery model, particularly as it applies to large enterprise-class projects.

R12.2 online patching – What are the hidden costs?

I attended a great presentation at UKOUG 2011, “Oracle E-business Suite’s use of edition-based redefinition for online patching,” delivered by Bryn Llewellyn from Oracle. The presentation provided thorough insight on how EBR works and how E-Business Suite will be able to use it for online patching. It answered many questions, but raised a few more questions and concerns. I’ll try to summarize in this post the main concerns I’ve been thinking about after attending this presentation.
