(The basics — comment here if you’d be interested to hear a non-partisan talk about the technical challenges faced by the IT team during the Obama campaign [particularly if you’re not an American who likes the idea of Obama as President, but even if you are].)
So, we all saw when Jonathan Schwartz posted this on election night:
Now, back in December 2001 one of the speakers at LISA (a system administrator’s conference) was a William LeFebvre, who spoke about what it was like to run CNN.com during the extremely high peak times of Sept. 11-12, 2001. I was not at that keynote speech, but I have heard a lot about it, including the fact that they were down to 85% capacity due to previously planned maintenance, that they diverted resources from all their other web properties except for the Cartoon Network’s website, so children had a place to go on the internet, etc.
I think it would be wonderful to learn about the various technologies (including MySQL) used and challenges faced by folks “behind the scenes” at barackobama.com (and now change.gov), since they have to keep in mind the high rate of burstiness, and of course how to scale not just for the peaks but for generally higher demand for longer periods of time, like the week before the election occurred.
I know some of the folks “behind the scenes”, so I could easily introduce the conference chair to them and vice versa, but I also wonder:
Am I being America-centric here? Does the rest of the world (and the Republican part of the US!) care about this? I think it’s really important with regards to how technology can really change things, and I have read many articles such as this one about how Obama’s campaign used the internet to get more people involved, but maybe the rest of the world is above and beyond that, and it is only because I am sitting here in the US that I feel this is remarkable?
So comment here (particularly if you’re not an American who likes the idea of Obama as President, but even if you are) if you’d be interested to hear a non-partisan talk about the technical challenges faced by the IT team during the campaign? If there’s a lot I can start to work on convincing the Powers That Be that this is would be a good keynote to have!
