At the International Oracle Users Group (IOUG) Live 2005 database user event this week, its new CIO David Thompson highlighted improvements to the company’s database and technology software maintenance policies. He also discussed newly added features, such as live Web conferencing, to the company’s MetaLink online support offering.
The San Francisco Chronicle has chosen Oracle’s Larry Ellison as CEO of the year. Other Bay Area CEOs fared much better in the numbers game, but the Chronicle chose Ellison because of his ability to create a long-term strategy for his company to prevail in a competitive market—and pursue it with determination.
Oracle OpenWorld, PeopleSoft Connect and Retek World Conferences Have Now Merged to Create Industry’s Top Forum for Customers and Partners
The Oracle apps usuers group (OAUG) has joined with Quest International Users Group, an association for PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards users, to create a Fusion Council. The Council will act as bridge between Oracle and users of Oracle’s Fusion software, offering a forum and educational tool for learning more about the middleware.
Although Oracle is currently running a distant second to SAP in market share, the company seems committed to unseating its rival. SAP currently holds 45% of the global market for HR, accounting, and basic business software, while Oracle stands at 19%, but Oracle remains undeterred.
The arrival of radically restructured database architectures is now finally at hand. Data and procedures are finally being joined, but traditional relational databases were never designed for the commingling of data and algorithms. Databases are transforming and the inside the database/outside the database dichotomy has become a thing of the past.
Several Oracle vulnerabilities have made the SANS Top Twenty List, updated for the first quarter of 2005. The Database section of this “living” document outlines the current Oracle issues to watch for and contains links to patches or further information.
The talks are no longer active, but sources say that Oracle was recently meeting with Siebel Systems about a possible buyout. Neither Siebel nor Oracle representatives could be reached for comment regarding the discussions between the two companies.
