Many database administrators who are hungry for CORE database sessions at Oracle Open World need to look far and go out of their way to resister early for presentations in this discipline. Database administration, in some circles, is looked upon as a “dying” role as vendors automate and encapsulate CORE support activities into the likes of ASH, Cloud Control and some other high-end management assistants. The fact remains … regardless of what we are told, the strong CORE database skills are here to stay and a demand for education on this topic is not going anywhere quickly.
I know Oracle Open World from the blogs, twitter, and YoutTube clips of the sessions and all the fun going on. Now as I look forward to attend my first ever Open World, and present there, I cannot wait. I believe that its not only a great technical mela (i.e festival), but also a stellar opportunity for the networking.
I’ve been attending OOW every year since I moved to San Francisco in 2007. I always enjoy the event – great speakers, parties, crowds, meeting old friends, hearing new product announcement. I like the excitement. This year the event is particularly exciting for me: For the first time, I’m attending as a speaker and not just as attendee. I’ll be speaking quite a bit actually, on rather diverse list of topics. Here’s what my week look’s like?
Here are a few suggestions to maximize your time at OOW and allow you to get as much bang for your education (and entertainment) dollar as possible:
Along comes the Oracle RAC Special Interest Group (SIG) which is appearing at a conference near you. At Oracle Open World 2012, RAC SIG personnel will be on-hand running RAC Attack – a hands-on lab where you can build a cluster on your Windows, MAC, or Linux personal computer. This is a dream come true. I first did RAC Attack at the UKOUG show in Birmingham last December. I am not anywhere close to being a RAC expert but I have rolled my sleeves up and got into the technology. Do not miss this opportunity at Oracle Open World next week in San Francisco
Every time I have had the pleasure of attending Oracle Open World, I have discovered a plethora of technical heavy-weights from all over the world in attendance. I enjoy meeting and shmoozing with these people almost as much as absorbing the technical content of the show itself. Many of my Pythian colleagues are presenting at OOW12 and thereby making this fine company AND themselves more renowned in the Oracle tech arena:
Oracle OpenWorld 2012 is just over a month away and yes we are organizing the Annual Oracle Bloggers Meetup — one of your top favorite events of the OpenWorld.
Pythian was at Insync12 in Melbourne and your’s truly presented two sessions on Exadata, one dealt with the overview of the machine while answering the justification of the beast, and the other tried to demystify the working of DBRM with the IORM within Exadata. It was a great two days of technical fun was packed with nifty tricks, cool tips, strengthening of knowledge and sharing of it in an exquisite way.

This Australian conference represents the climax of Technology, Development and Applications users in one go. As icing on the cake, mobile technology and telecommunication will also feature during this scintillating saga of expertise and sharing of knowledge. Where there is mentionable database talk, there is Pythian. I will be presenting two sessions at the Insync12 this year, both about Exadata, a technology closer to my heart.
