Oracle has consolidated the diagnostic information of database under one umbrella called as Automatic Diagnostic Repository (ADR). This repository is XML-based and that opens up new vistas for future Oracle diagnostic tools to manipulate the hierarchical data.
In looking at this subject, most of you will say: Hey Yury! What’s new that you can tell us about? The following note describes it all:
11gR2 Grid Infrastructure Does not Use ULIMIT Setting Appropriately [ID 983715.1] These were exactly my thoughts when I was called to troubleshoot a case where a DB instance, starting with the “srvctl start instance” command failed to use Huge Pages in Linux. Huge pages are configured in Linux already as shown in the following example.
Warm welcome to the Log Buffer, a weekly amalgamation of database news across different technologies. Let’s get warmed up with sizzling Log Buffer #213.

Last week brought great news to Pythian – one of our DBAs in Pakistan, Fahd Mirza, has become an Oracle ACE. Fahd joined Pythian in September 2010 as the very first Pythian employee in Pakistan and thanks to his skills and ambitions ended up on the team supporting Exadata environments. I should also mention that another Oracle ACE DBA joined us recently – Jared Still. Jared is a well respected member of Oracle community, member of the OakTable Network and a veteran of the Oracle-L mailing list
Greg Rahn of Oracle’s real-world performance group posted a technical review of an article I wrote last summer, entitled Making the Most of Oracle Exadata. I have a few comments on the technical concerns Greg raised.
I will be speaking at the Twin Cities Oracle Users Group 2011 Winter Meeting. It’s the first time I’m speaking for this user group so I’m excited to meet the new audience. I will present one hour version of my Grid Infrastructure Internals session. Of course, no demos during presentation as it’s just enough to cover the theory slides but I’ll leave the demo as a homework as usual. :)
I’m working on a small story about database consolidation and interested to learn what are success and failures that others are going through. While we have our own experience at Pythian, I find it interesting to learn about what others are going through. If you have enough details, it would be nice to see your feedback along these lines…
I just read on Metalink (1130327.1) that we Commodore 64 users who have to patch our 10.2.0.4. will get extened support untill April 30, 2011
