Ronald Bradford and I produced a successful MySQL track at Kaleidoscope (hereinafter referred to as Kscope). With a speaker list of Philip Antoniades, Josh Sled and Craig Sylvester of Oracle, Laine Campbell of PalominoDB, Patrick Galbraith of Northscale, Sarah Novotny of Blue Gecko, Padrig O’Sullivan of Akiba, Dossy Shiobara of Panoptic.com and Matt Yonkovic of Percona, we knew the technical content was going to be great.
For me, ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2010 started on Friday with the ACE Directors briefing. Best practices topic was touched there slightly and I twitted about it. I decided that the feedback deserves a blog post so I’m simply quoting the conversation here. If you have anything to add, you know where to find the comment box.
I just arrived and right in time for the Oracle ACE Directors’ briefing that will run for the whole days of Friday. This is a super secret meeting where Oracle’s super secret plans are shared. The ACE Director’s briefing is where Oracle shares the roadmap of its products — some of it is long term strategy and some is about the upcoming releases.
By now you know that there is a MySQL Track during next week’s ODTUG Kaleidoscope in Washington, DC. Ronald Bradford and I organized the schedule at the last minute (Ronald did a lot of the work!). It was difficult to fill a schedule with 19 sessions that are either 1 hour or 1.5 hours long, and to do it I ended up with three presentations. At each presentation I will be giving away a copy of The MySQL Administrator’s Bible, so be sure to show up! All MySQL track sessions are in Maryland C, and all times are Eastern.
NoCOUG Spring Conference 2010 is in just 10 days, I’ll be doing my two hour long presentation — Demystifying Oracle RAC Workload Management. Here are the slides from my presentation at RMOUG 2010. I am not sure how much sense all this will make without my comments. We may do it in a webinar if there is sufficient interest. Regardless I will probably be doing it again at some point in the future.

Oracle Automatic Storage Management has proven to be one of the most widely adopted new features in Oracle Database 10g and it has been dramatically improved in the later 11g releases. This presentation will explain what changes are solved by ASM, how these challenges are solved, what barriers there are to ASM adoptions, and how 11g Release 2 addresses these barriers. This is your chance to ask any questions you want and get honest answers on anything from Oracle databases and Fusion Apps to diving with sharks and anything in between. Last month at the Boston MySQL User Group, I went through the meanings of INNER, LEFT/RIGHT OUTER, CROSS, NATURAL joins, how to do a FULL OUTER JOIN in MySQL, and what STRAIGHT_JOIN means. I also explained how to recognize when you want those types of joins, and best practices for the semantics of writing joins and design patterns. Subqueries were explained in this session, and some examples of how to think differently so that you end up writing JOINs instead of subqueries. The slides and video are posted here.
