Log Buffer #101: a Carnival of the Vanities for DBAs

Welcome the the 101st edition of Log Buffer, the weekly review of database blogs.

This edition was originally claimed by Ward Pond for his SQL Server Blog. Unfortunately, Ward is, in his own words, “dealing with the aftermath of a burst appendix,” which is a very good reason not to spend your time at the computer. Ward, heal up soon! We’ll see you on LB before too long.

In lieu of the normal Log Buffer, I throw it open to our readers. Please leave a comment mentioning your favourite database blog items from the week that was, and anything else you care to say about them.

LB will be back to normal next Friday. See you then!

The most exciting news in the SQL Server world is that SQL Server 2008 RC0 is available for public download:

    http://sqlblog.com/blogs/andy_leonard/archive/2008/06/10/sql-server-2008-rc0-download.aspx

Some good stuff in here, including the full implementation of the new sparse columns features, and a much-anticipated T-SQL step debugger.

  2. Thanks, Adam.

I’ll mention Keith Murphy’s post on the MySQL survey, which, as he mentions, closes in three days.

Rational Relational’s post, How To Perform a Connection Massacre.

Tanel Poder’s Advanced Oracle Troubleshooting Guide, Part 5: Sampling V$ stuff with WaitProf. Really fast. Using SQL!, described by commenters as, “amazing,” “awesome,” and “brilliant,” among other superlatives.

We haven’t heard from Steve Karam, the Oracle Alchemist in a while. Here’s his post, Undone by Undo.

Ok sneaking this in in the hopes if getting someone from the larger database community to point the PHP team at the right people within the firebird/interbase/sybase/frontbasesql communities to ensure continued support for these databases in PHP:

I am intrested in this discussion Best MySQL Server Under $10K?: http://beerpla.net/2008/06/11/best-mysql-server-under-10k/. It presents many options.

  5. Chen added some of her faves in this post: Few Links of the Week and a Biased Recommendation.

    Thanks, Chen!
