thanks very much for the tip, but in my case (win xp) it still won't organize threads from some messages...that's really odd, because the sender and email of those odd messages are the same. Would appreciate any thoughts on how to fix that.

Settings:
mail.correct_threading = true
mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads = false
mail.strict_threading = false
mail.thread_without_re = true (i require that for the messages from the same sender to be organized in threads as well)

Just a heads up for any Windows XP users: I had to keep the factory setting mail.correct_threading = true. When I set that one to false (per the instructions) the threading didn't work. Meanwhile, I'm back where I used to be under T2. Thanks for the great post!

Thank you. I run Thunderbird in Windows Vista so the process was a bit different, but I now have proper threading.

I had to go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General (tab) -> Config Editor... (button). I then filtered by thread and double clicked on each of the three config items you showed above. I closed Thunderbird and re-opened it. Right-clicked on the folder and rebuilt indexes and poof! Beautiful logical treading.

Well, I was having the same messed up threading problem you were so I tried your fix.
Now I have no threads in my folder no matter if I tell it to display threaded or unthreaded :(
