You should be able to answer yes to these five questions before you contemplate upgrading to Oracle's cutting edge: - Are the products that interact with Oracle certified on the new release? If you aren't sure, and can't find out definitively, the answer is "No".
- Is the new release certified by Oracle on the homogenous collection of operating systems you have running at your company?
- Do you have an experienced and solid database administrator on staff, or at your disposal, to lead the charge into the new release?
- Are there one or more features in the new release that are a "must have" and would make your life considerably easier—without triggering other complications? (The bug you know is potentially better than thousands you don't.)
- Is there some compelling new feature/functionality in the new release that will minimize potential downtime?
All "yes" and craving the cutting edge? Go for it.
