Pythian OOW09 Diaries: Bloggers Meetup

I’m quite late to blog about it now but the OOW09 Bloggers Meetup was a success. I should say thanks to the OTN for sponsoring the bar tab as well as to HP for sponsoring a nice HP laptop as a prize.

The original location was a smaller area with a larger outdoor balcony but due to the weather concerns, it was moved completely indoor in the bigger banquet style room and it worked extremely well. We had more than 50 people showed up — probably around 70+ — as 51 t-shirts I printed for that occasion has completely gone.

The idea with t-shirt is to collect signatures from bloggers you meet and talk to. The most valuable result is that you get totally cool and unique t-shirt that you will want to wear after day (or maybe not wear and put it under the glad instead of the painting on the wall and demonstrate in your living room). The least all bloggers are going to do is to post a photo of their t-shirts — make sure you leave some feedback later.

Here is mine:

Oracle Bloggers Meetup @ OOW — Location Change!

Heads to everyone who hasn’t got a message on Twitter or didn’t read Justin’s blog post — we are moving completely indoor (guess why?). It’s now LJ’s Martini Club & Grill @ Metreon 2nd Floor but same address — 101 4th Street, San Francisco, CA 94103.

You just need to look for a large Metreon label on the building — adjusted to Moscone South.

See you all there!

Bloggers Meetup @ Oracle Open World 2009

Are you an Oracle blogger attending Oracle Open World 2009?

If so, you are invited to attend this Oracle Bloggers Meetup during OOW 2009 — a chance to meet your online buddies face-to-face in relaxed and informal atmosphere.

What: OOW 2009 Bloggers Meetup

When: Tue, 13-Oct, 6:00pm

Where: LJ’s Martini Club & Grill @ Metreon 2nd Floor, 101 4th Street, San Francisco Updated: 13-Oct!

It’s a big disappointment that Eddie Awad is not going to be with us at the Oracle Open World this year… But the show must go on and Oracle Bloggers Meetup must happen again this year so I’m picking up the baton from Eddie and will organize the meetup this year with the help of Justin Kestelyn and Lillian Buziak (Oracle ACE Wrangler).

First things first, thanks to OTN for sponsoring our gathering again — just like the last year, we will have drinks served for a while. But there are some differences from the previous years…

Sydney MySQL User Group meetup #9 — In-depth MySQL with Arjen Lentz

What: SMUG#9 – In-depth MySQL with Arjen Lentz

When: Monday, September 7, 2009 5:30 PM

Where: Please make sure to RSVP (even “Maybe”) so that we know how many are coming!
Sydney Mechanics School of Art
Level 3, 280 Pitt Street
Sydney
02 9262 7300

I’m very excited to announce a very special guest at this user group meeting!

Arjen Lentz is in town doing his Sydney training program 7-Sep to 9-Sep and kindly agreed to drop by and talk about something interesting in the MySQL world – be it a technical topic or the state of the MySQL community eco-system.

For those of you who are relatively new in the group – Arjen has actually kicked-off the Sydney MySQL User Group few years ago. Arjen has been Australia’s earliest MySQL AB employee. He lives in Brisbane and is visiting Sydney for just few days so this is a unique opportunity to meet him personally unless you are a lucky student enrolled into his training program classes that week.

We are starting at 5:30pm with pizza and beer and some mingling around. Around 6:00pm, we should be in the condition to move into a more formal discussion led by Arjen. The finish should be by about 8:30pm.

Please don’t forget to RSVP and answer the question at the RSVP form on what topics would you like to discuss the most.

Looking forward to see many of you there!

We are back! After 3 years of being silent, SMUG (can I call it so? I know there are conflicts with other acronyms) resurrects the meetings.

The logistic of the meetup is the following:

  • 5:30pm — the gathering starts and we have pizza and beers and talking your peers
  • 6:00pm — we start the presentation
  • 7:00pm — break and peer networking consuming the leftovers
  • 7:30pm — we have an open (but slightly moderated) discussion. Topic is TBC. Perhaps, we can talk about future of MySQL now that Oracle’s bought Sun?

First MMUG Meetup in Malta

So, the Malta MySQL User Group has had its first ever meet-up today, and it was a success! When organizing it, I had no clue how many people would show up, people have said “yes” and then changed to “no”, and vice versa.

Anyway, so the morning came, and I sent out a few confirmation emails, and it suddenly dropped down to just three of us, which was a shame. Anyway, around 5pm, I noticed that there was four more that had just said they wanted to attend. Unfortunately, one of those dropped out, but it was still a great turnout.

This is a great opportunity for us to promote MySQL use in Malta, as well as share experience and knowledge. Also just to network a bit.

So, this time, for meeting #1, we met up outside a local bank, and walked to Il-Mithna, which is a local restaurant. In this picture, there is the first core group of local user group members, all happily gathered and just about to start our discussions.
