Chrome Enterprise in Healthcare: Positively Impacting the End-User Experience

The goal of technology in a healthcare setting is to simplify a care team’s work, not make it more complex. Plus, it should do its part in securing critical patient data. Google Enterprise and Chrome devices are a simple solution for this complex industry.

The Traditional VDI Setup

In the modern healthcare organization, most physicians and care providers use traditional VDIs (virtual desktops) for charting patient information. In some organizations, this consists of a cart with a thin client attached, as well as a battery, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It’s a complex setup that’s often cumbersome to wheel around and use. Other organizations place a desktop in every single patient room—even those that aren’t in use. This results in wasted overhead.

What Chrome Enterprise Does to Improve the User Experience

Google Chrome Enterprise and Chrome devices are different. Instead of placing units in each room or requiring providers to push around computer carts, they can use a simple, handheld Chrome device. For example, physicians can flip a Chromebook into a tablet, walk around with it, and take patient notes or fill prescriptions quickly. Or nurses can walk into a room with everything they need in-hand and deliver injections fast without the need to wait for the desktop to respond. Plus, all care providers can access the EMR (electronic medical record) right from the device.

Maintenance & Overhead Costs

Traditional VDI setups require costly maintenance, even on devices that sit in unused rooms. Chromebooks update automatically, saving time and effort. Plus, Chromebooks and other Chrome devices are cheaper than traditional VDI setups reducing overhead costs.

Security

Chrome devices are completely secure. VDI systems require operating systems that must be patched and updated manually. In contrast, Chrome devices are updated automatically during working hours—no downtime required. Via the Google Admin Console, admins can streamline device management by taking action through one secure interface. Many healthcare providers fear the loss of handheld devices during daily movement from room to room and floor to floor. Although the loss of a device is critical, there’s no data stored on them at all. Admins can wipe the device remotely, mitigating risk quickly. Google also allows providers to use Managed Guest Sessions, which launches a single app instead of the entire OS. So, if a device is stolen, it’s useless unless the perpetrator has credentials to access the device. It’s fully encrypted at rest, resulting in the device becoming nothing more than a paperweight in the wrong hands.

Grab and Go Functionality

Physicians should be able to focus on their work, not switching out devices when they lose battery life. Chrome devices have a 12-hour battery life, perfect for all-day use. With Grab and Go , care teams can grab a device from a nearby station and hop back into their VDI session seamlessly.
