Customer success story

Global media leader protected critical broadcast systems

Cross-continental database modernization eliminated severe broadcast downtime risks.

Pythian modernized a legacy Windows Oracle database to an active-active 19c Linux architecture across four nodes with uninterrupted GoldenGate replication.

Accelerated global expansion left a leading financial media enterprise running core broadcast systems on a single, unsupported Oracle 11g database server on Windows across data centers in North America and Europe. Seeking to eliminate compliance vulnerabilities without breaking the specialized live broadcast software, the client partnered with Pythian to execute a complete cross-platform migration. Pythian configured four new Linux environments, cloned the 200GB target database, upgraded to Oracle 19c (Release Update 19.20, later patched to 19.29), and established active-active GoldenGate replication across global data centers. The migration eliminated end-of-life risks, preserved core broadcast workflows, and enabled a seamless transition into ongoing 24/7 operational support.

When live broadcasts are on the line, even a second of database downtime threatens our brand. Pythian protected our global continuity and gave us total confidence in our cross-continental infrastructure."

Outdated databases hampered global broadcast operations.

Pythian executed prerequisite host setups and GoldenGate configurations to migrate workloads from Windows to Linux and establish ongoing 24/7 support.

Maintaining live cross-continental synchronization during a major platform migration seemed almost impossible, but Pythian executed it without a single second of application downtime."

UNSUPPORTED DATABASE ENGINES

Legacy Oracle engine exposed broadcast systems to risks

A single production database instance remained locked on Oracle version 11g on Windows, creating compliance bottlenecks and blocking core broadcast delivery tools software updates.

CROSS-PLATFORM MIGRATION CONSTRAINTS

Linux database migration required storage re-architecture

Shifting 200GB production assets off legacy Windows onto a four-node Linux environment demanded filesystem reconfiguration and export/import migration.

INTERNAL SKILL SHORTAGES

Complex replication demanded specialized technical oversight

Managing real-time, bi-directional replication across global nodes required deep, specialized Oracle GoldenGate expertise to ensure seamless patching, prevent data drift, and maintain high availability without pulling internal teams away from core initiatives.

ROUND-THE-CLOCK COVERAGE GAP

The application needed 24-hour database support

Operating a continuous, high-availability broadcast infrastructure across transatlantic time zones created severe operational risk if an active node suffered an unplanned outage or performance degradation outside local business hours.

Executed a clean cross-platform migration from legacy Windows to an optimized 4-node Linux architecture.

Pythian DBAs collaborated with internal systems administrators to install Oracle 19c (Release Update 19.20) Database software on four new Linux hosts. Storing datafiles in the standard filesystem, the team migrated the existing single Windows database using export/import routines to establish a high-availability baseline, with RMAN configured for ongoing daily backups.

Engineered continuous active-active data synchronization across North American and European nodes.

Pythian configured new bi-directional GoldenGate replication topologies across all four active database servers in North America and Europe to establish real-time data synchronization. During Quality Assurance testing, DBAs safely paused replication, opened target databases in read-write mode for application validation, reconfigured connection paths to alternate active servers within minutes during failovers, and resumed real-time sync with zero data loss.

Delivered tactical release update patching to ensure compliance without breaking application workflows.

After the initial migration to release update 19.20, Pythian executed a precision lifecycle patching sequence to upgrade the four-node active-active database to Release Update 19.29. This satisfied quarterly compliance standards while preserving specialized live broadcast software compatibility.

Established continuous support to guarantee continuous broadcast uptime.

Following the successful migration, Pythian actively monitors and maintains all four database instances 24/7, handling routine maintenance, quarterly updates, and rapid incident resolution—eliminating operational overhead, preventing downtime, and ensuring peak system availability for core business operations.

Optimize core database infrastructure to guarantee global operational stability.
