Complex multi-cloud environment undermined efficient operations
Porch initially undertook a partial "lift-and-shift" migration to Google Cloud in 2017 but was left with remnant services running across Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. This complex, multi-cloud environment created significant operational challenges. The dispersed infrastructure increased management overhead, complicated network routing (like using an AWS vSRX Router requiring specialized Juniper skills the internal team lacked), and made achieving a holistic view of security difficult. Specifically, its previous routing process involved multiple platforms, posing a risk of misdirected traffic and complicating maintenance and troubleshooting. This complexity also posed a security risk, as the larger attack surface required more diverse expertise and undermined efficient threat detection. Porch needed to consolidate onto a single cloud platform to simplify management, enhance security, and accelerate its long-term strategic goals for data modernization.

Pythian's team successfully eliminated reliance on Azure and AWS VPN setups to simplify network routing and migrated the Content Delivery Network (CDN) and associated assets from AWS to Google Cloud.
