One of the first questions that I asked myself when EM GC 11g came out is how would a silent
installation go especially taking into account the use of WebLogic server as the http server.
But before any attempt of silent installation I started the GC 11g GUI installation to local VM machine
(Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4 64-bit) with an allocated 2Gb of memory and got errors since
WebLogic server was not installed there.

Update 9-Apr-10: The documentation was pulled out from public which is expected. Looks like someone “leaked” it hoping that it won’t be discovered without being referenced from the OTN. Guess, what? How many of us who expected it and downloaded it locally just in case? ;-) – documentation is back.
Thanks to Marco Gralike for drawing my attention to it — yes, Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g Grid Control documentation is available online!
There you can find the list of EM 11g new features. After I quickly skimmed through it I could mention few areas:
- Full blown Fusion Middleware management support
- More complete support for RAC, Grid Infrastructure and ASM
- Integration with My Oracle Support
- Improvements in provisioning (I hope it really works now and can actually start saving us time and not make us spend more time troubleshooting failures)
- Better virtualization support (must be focused on Oracle VM though)

This is a call for topics for the upcoming Server Manageability Roundtable that I will be running at UKOUG Conference 2009 Technology and E-Business Suite. I should have probably blogged earlier about this but better later than never…
The Server Manageability Roundtable is on Monday, 30-Nov, at 16:25 in the foyer on the 5th level. It’s a bit late and I should have probably proposed to change the venue to the nearby pub but it’s too late now so let’s make it the last effort for the day and then…
The topic is quite broad so we will obviously need to focus on the most relevant areas for the attendees and this is the chance to state your interest so please comment away!
Here are the topics that I think might be particularly interested:
- Oracle Enterprise Manager — experience, deployment issues, success stories, strengths and weaknesses.
- Impact of virtualization and cloud computing — does it make it easier to manage our infrastructure?
- Costs cutting by manageability improvements — myth or reality?
- Managing highly available environment — human factors.
Make sure to leave a comment below whether you have something to say on the topics above or something completely new. Sharing your experience would be fantastic! Thanks in advance for all contributions and I promise I’ll write up the report on this round-table.

No doubt you want to cast you first vote for my abstract — Developing Plug-ins for Oracle Enterprise Manager by example :)
Every Oracle professional knows about Oracle Enterprise Manager’s extensive monitoring capability for Oracle products. However, only few realize that Oracle Enterprise Manager can be easily extended thanks to its Extensibility framework.
This presentation starts with an introduction of Enterprise Manager’s Extensibility features and walks the audience through the basics of creating a new plug-in. This session will also demonstrate some proven plug-in development steps based on the experience gained from developing MySQL management plug-in.
Session includes a demo of the plug-in development scenarios. After this presentation, attendees will be able to design and develop management plug-ins for their own applications.
Login to Oracle Mix and vote now. At the time of writing, my session is on the very top — help to keep it there! ;-)

I’ve got notification of new download on OTN. Here is the link to OEM download page with 10.2.0.4 is for Linux x86 and Windows x86. Other platforms should be available upon release on the same page. I think I also saw it on in my Google Reader mentioned but today I couldn’t find it.
We are rolling it out for one Oracle Agent installation with one of our clients today – let’s see how it works.
