Outdoor retailer reduced costs migrating to Google Cloud
This outdoor retailer faced mounting technical debt from persistent Oracle database bottlenecks and overwhelming maintenance cycles that stretched their internal teams. They partnered with Pythian to migrate their on-premises Oracle databases to Google Cloud’s Bare Metal Solution (BMS) to escape high licensing fees and rigid infrastructure. By moving to Oracle BMS on Google Cloud, the retailer gained the specific ability to optimize their Oracle footprint and reduce their licensing overhead significantly.
Pythian established a robust disaster recovery framework within Google Cloud to protect the retailer’s product data. This included setting up new backup requirements and conducting a successful DR exercise using Dbvisit software to validate the system. The result was a modernized recovery plan that provided the technical team with renewed confidence in data integrity.
To simplify the retailer's technology stack, Pythian managed the decommissioning of remnant AWS Relational Data Service (RDS) components. This ensured that all critical environments—production, test, and stage—were unified under a single management umbrella on Google Cloud. This consolidation eliminated the complexity of managing multi-cloud silos and reduced overall operational friction
