Oracle 11.2 Silent Installation on OpenSolaris

When Oracle announced Oracle 11.2 for Solaris (x86-64), I decided to try a silent installation of Oracle on OpenSolaris, even though it is not certified.

I downloaded the Solaris ISO and installed it as 64-bit on one of my virtual machines with 1Gb of RAM. Installation of the OS went without a problem and I was soon enjoying a look at OpenSolaris. I eventually stopped admiring the good-looking interface (interesting—do they sell OpenSolaris-style doughnuts somewhere in Sun’s offices?), and connected through a plain old black-and-white ssh terminal to execute the silent installation.

Based on the silent installation that I had earlier executed on Linux for 11.2, I started the following: Read the rest of this entry . . .

Quick Install Guide for Oracle 10g Release 2 on Mac OS X Leopard & Snow Leopard (Intel)

I was very surprised that Oracle released Oracle Database for Mac OSX, especially, version 10g now that 11g has been out for almost 2 years. Well, I guess Oracle wanted to please Mac users expecting things just work and decided that good proved 10g is the way to go. On the other hand, we’ve been supporting 11g in production for quite a while and I must say it’s much better quality compare to 10g when it came out. I’m pretty sure there was a significant customer that influenced that decision — interesting who might that be?

Anyway, there is no quick install guide for OS X but only a standard Oracle® Database Installation Guide
10g Release 2 (10.2) for Apple Mac OS X (Intel)
. It’s fine but if you want to install Oracle on your MacBook and not for production use then you might take some shortcuts and follow a quick instructions so I gathered my notes while installing just released Oracle Database 10.2.0.4 on my MacBook and this is what you see now.

Oracle Silent Mode, Part 4: Installation Of A 10.2 RAC

This fourth post introduces the fundamental silent installation commands for a 10.2 RAC. For a complete series agenda, see below:

  1. Installation of 10.2 And 11.1 Databases
  2. Patches of 10.2 And 11.1 databases
  3. Cloning Software and databases
  4. Install a 10.2 RAC Database (this post!)
  5. Add a Node to a 10.2 RAC database
  6. Remove a Node from a 10.2 RAC database
  7. Install a 11.1 RAC Database
  8. Add a Node to a 11.1 RAC database
  9. Remove a Node from a 11.1 RAC database
  10. A ton of other stuff you should know

As the title suggests, this post will dig into how to (1) install the 10.2 Clusterware, (2) apply the latest Patch Set on top of it, (3) install the 10.2 database, (4) apply the latest Patch Set on top of it, and (5) create a RAC database. These operations will be performed with the Oracle Universal Installer, NETCA and DBCA in silent mode. Before you start, just in case you’re not familiar yet with Oracle Silent Installation, have a look at the first post of the series

Checking the prerequisites

Before you start the installation, make sure all the prerequisites are met. Use the 10.2 Clusterware and Real Application Clusters Installation Guide for your platform to set them up. You should also refer to Metalink Note 169706.1 for the latest updates and make sure the prerequisites for non-RAC databases are met by running the RDA HCVE module as described in the 1st post of the series.

To check that you haven’t missed anything, you should also run the Cluster Verify Utility (CVU). This utility is part of the Clusterware distribution or can be downloaded — get the latest release from here (note that you don’t have to be connected to OTN to download the latest release; you can just wget it once you’ve got its URL).

To run the latest Cluster Verify Utility, create a directory and unzip the CVU there. You can run the check as below:
