General comment: I really wish the videos were anything but WMV format. 116 MB for less than 8 min is just too heavy and there are lots of better alternatives that are more widely supported (a youtube-style player?) I use Ubuntu btw.

Actually I shoot for the best quality possible under 400 Mb or so. So I purposefully chose a high bitrate for this file, so the quality would be better. It’s not actually .wmv being bloaty. (The size and time of the file is shown before you download; if you don’t like the size you can just stream it online).
And I work with the tools I have. I’m not a video expert, so I use the tools I have; I’m happy to take conversions and post them alongside.
For the 2007 MySQL Users Conference I did all the videos at a low and high bitrate, and nobody downloaded the lower bitrates. Considering that saving a video file on my system takes as long as the video file actually is — a 30 minute video file takes about 30 minutes to save — saving 2 different qualities of tens of hours of footage is a lot of extra time.
If folks would like to convert the files and point me to their location, I will happily put them up on technocation.org in order to save you the bandwidth.
There’s only so much one person can do.

Thanks Sheeri, I know that you’re busy. I wonder if a quick script to slam them into youtube would work? Is that even possible, do they have an API or something? I’ll leave that up to someone who has time to find out. I’m really busy too.

The problem with YouTube is that it only allows videos of 10 minutes. Google Video is a bit better, but it takes a while for submissions to be accepted.
And the biggest issue for me is that I am not in control of the content. On http://www.technocation.org, I have full control and responsibility of the files. Technocation is a not-for-profit and as such, its hosting company extends free bandwidth, so that’s not an issue.
